Associated Labels and Packaging, a BC, Canada-based, family-owned converter of premium label and flexible packaging solutions, is celebrating its 45th anniversary this Canada Day, July 1, 2025.
What began in 1980 as a small local print shop, then going by the name Associated Printers, has grown into a multi-building operation with over 150 employees serving some of North America and BC’s most recognizable brands.
Alongside its business success, Associated has remained deeply rooted in the community, sponsoring youth sports, supporting local businesses, and championing BC’s next generation of entrepreneurs. Built on a foundation of innovation, sustainability, and strong community roots, Associated continues to push the boundaries of custom label and packaging manufacturing while staying true to the values that sparked its journey nearly half a century ago. This commitment to excellence was recently validated when Associated Labels and Packaging achieved an outstanding 98.19% score on its IFS PACsecure audit. This serves as a rigorous international food safety standard that demonstrates the company’s dedication to quality and safety across all manufacturing processes.
The company’s commitment to long-term relationships isn’t just with its customers—it’s also with its people. The team’s deep knowledge, passion, and dedication is a key part of what continues to drive the company’s success.
Associated Labels and Packaging is proud to have many team members who have grown their careers within the company, including Don Tabata, who has been a key part of the sales department for over 35 years.
“I joined Associated Labels in 1987 as a sales representative when we had just two reps on the team,” says Don Tabata, sales executive. “Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of becoming part of the management team, but the most rewarding aspect of my career has been seeing us grow with our customers. I am very proud these customers are still with us to this day.”
Perhaps current COO Dan Vassiliev best exemplifies the culture of internal growth and opportunity that exists at Associated, having risen from production assistant to his current leadership role since joining the company in 1996. Vassiliev progressed through numerous production roles before shifting to the accounting department while attending part-time classes at BCIT. Upon completion of his CMA, he returned to production as operations manager, then advanced to general manager. Ultimately, he grew to chief operating officer.
His diverse experience across multiple departments has proven invaluable throughout his career progression.
Associated Labels and Packaging is deeply woven into the fabric of the community. As part of its long-standing commitment to supporting youth and grassroots initiatives, the company proudly sponsors several Coquitlam sports teams in lacrosse (Coquitlam Adanacs) and hockey (Coquitlam Express). The company has continued its tradition of investing in the next generation of players and leaders. Seeing the Associated Labels and Packaging brand proudly showcased on players’ uniforms and on rink walls at the Poirier Sport Complex is an especially poignant point of pride.
Beyond sports, the company recently partnered with BC Food & Beverage (BCFB) to help launch its new Emerging Member Bursary program. This is an exciting opportunity to support up-and-coming food and beverage companies in BC through fully sponsored annual BCFB memberships. The initiative is designed to foster industry growth, connect emerging brands with vital resources, and strengthen their path to success in British Columbia’s thriving food and beverage sector.
“Supporting startups and scaling brands is part of our commitment to innovation,” says Idelis Watkins, marketing specialist, Associated Labels and Packaging. “The bursary program allows us to give back to an industry that has helped shape who we are and to champion the next generation of entrepreneurs driving BC’s food and beverage future.”
As Associated Labels and Packaging marks 45 years in business, the company is taking time to reflect on its journey and the values that have shaped its success. Plans are underway to recognize the milestone throughout the year—honoring the people, partners, and innovations that have made the last four and a half decades possible.
The converter is also looking ahead to the future of packaging and manufacturing. With strong roots and a clear vision, the company is focused on continued growth and momentum as it charts a course towards 50 years and beyond.
